Hello comrades! I am dictating to my phone right now in a minute I am going to open up Netflix and start my rewatch of Young Royals S1E1. I don’t anticipate pausing much so I’m just going to dictate to my phone incoherently. That way you know you get the most spontaneous, the most emotive, and frankly, the most autistic interpretation. So thank you for coming along for the ride and I will talk to you when I post this on dreamwidth. Hej då!
A Netflix original series…
Wilhelm in front of the mirror. This is about identity… and a fight. I admit when I first started watching the show I really wanted to know what the fight was about and why he got into it. I actually had an elaborate headcanon that he had a friend who was a lesbian at his old old school. And some guy was like hitting on her in a homophobic way, and that’s why Wilhelm gets into a fight with this guy.
As for his lesbian friend, he knows he connects with this girl but not in a romantic way. He just kind of feels drawn to her. What he doesn’t know is it’s like the fellow queer kid bond. When he hears her getting harassed, it pisses him off and he fights. That didn’t happen, but if my headcanon were true, that girl would’ve come to Hillerska in season two and become Felice’s girlfriend. Alright, enough of my bullshit. Back to the show.
Wilhelm mentions his friends being in Stockholm. Fandom has pointed out that they never really reach out to him much at Hillerska, and I too am curious about who these kids are.
Mother, by which I mean Kristina, is looking great in blue! But is also kind of being a nightmare. I guess she got away from Tatooine though.
Wilhelm and Erik just swapped places and it’s symbolic!
I guess Wilhelm making his apology speech on camera opens up the question of how can you have genuine apologies in a world where all apologies are staged. I think that’s interesting because we kind of stage apologies all the time even outside the upper classes. (Although obviously it happens there a lot.) And there’s a lot of pressure to get apologies right, but in trying to make them right they become more performative.
Eye contact with the camera!
I have to admit I’m a little gay for the synchronized rowing shots. Even if the rowing boys are as a rule kind of horrible. I think this is because my parents wanted me to do crew in some alternate world where I went to prep school. It’s like, oh, that’s what I’m supposed to live up to.
Horses!!!
I wonder how many teachers are missing their planning period to greet Willhelm. Like I wonder if anyone’s there like shit I have to plan my social studies lesson. That would be me.
—AUGUST MY DIABOLICAL BOY <3
This is irreverent fandom brain speaking and I may regret saying this but… Alexander is a submissive.
Erik has Swedish flag colors on his scarf. Also I really do think that like Erik made August a lot of who he is. I am a Dirtbag Erik Truther (TM).
The school choir will welcome the prince… boy howdy, will they.
I really do want fic about Wilhelm and Felice in preschool together. Just like playing blocks and talking about animals…
August just said his gross ass thing and Erik laughed ewww.
OK, I admit it, I’m a bad person. I couldn’t enjoy Simon singing in his first scene. When I was a teenager, my father, who sings in choirs, would always call out various singers that I was listening to for their flaws. I could hear my dad in my head talking about Omar‘s voice doesn’t blend. I like it better in season 2! (This is why I’m a fandom pariah.) But aww Wilhelm’s falling in love and that’s cute. Edvin makes really cute falling in love faces. He’s like good for him, I’m so proud of him for his singing and I don’t even know him and I hope he likes my orange sweater.
August is now talking to Nils and Vincent about the party. August has the energy of like, if you’re a shitty student you’d want him in your group project because he’ll just do all the work. But if you like actually kind of want to have a collaborative experience, and like do your part of the group project because you’re a nerd (like me) August would just be like a nightmare cause he’d be trying to micromanage. Who would be the bigger diva on a group project, me or August? (That’s going to be my first dreamwidth poll.)
Nils saying as if we had anything in common about Simon… kind of ironic now that we know his whole deal.
Wille being like I won’t survive three years here is so high school in the most endearing way.
Erik, being like you can trust August like a brother. I really feel like August was keeping some secrets for Erik and I wanna know the tea.
The shelves in Wilhelm’s room are the same ones they had in my grandparents’ house. So it just gives me little Swedish girl feels.
OK is Erik also wearing a dark turtleneck? I stand by my point. Erik made August who he is. These messages will be more than just August I promise.
Duel of the curly haired boys as August and Simon posture at each other about buying booze for the party!
Can I count on you? August says, now a Democratic Party fundraising email.
Sara and Felice! Rousseau! The way that Sara is in love with Rousseau is just so sweet and so cute and so lovely. Aw, Felice. Such a sad face though. She’s not living up to her mom’s ridiculous expectations. :(
The scene where Sara and Felice groom Rousseau is so great because there’s just a lot of like neurotypical-neurodivergent conversation going on here. I also love it when Sara wears her hair in her little ponytail, because I feel like it just gives her such a look of like I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.
The way Felice just rests her head Rousseau’s side like I’m so bad at this. Also, a relatable high school feel.
Sarah and Simon on the way to the bus! Sarah’s aggressive fight for independence is calling out teenage me right now and I’m crying a little bit.
Rosh! Rosh and Ayub are so good! I love the way they’re styled. Love how their style is just immediately the opposite of Hillerska and it’s also really telling. You look at them kind of like crowded around the bus aisle with Simon, and then Sara is off to the side, like she doesn’t quite fit in.
Now we’re back to Felice. Good on the show for reminding us that girls masturbate too. She doesn’t look too into it, though. I think the show accidentally made Felice gay and I wish they had on purpose made Felice gay.
Here is Maddie. Maddie definitely attended a liberal private school, possibly founded by Quakers, and now she’s here at Hillerska like what the fuck can you people all please find your inner light. The way Felice touches Maddie‘s hair is also very gay, and I stand by the part where they slept together once in Heart and Homeland. (As a friends with benefits thing! We love it!)
Now we see Felice’s mom commenting on Felice’s Instagram. I feel like we’ve entered the era of teen show where parents are on social media too, and that’s a new horror. Wilhelm also left like a heart eyes emoji and I feel like we as fans should unpack that more.
Back at the Eriksson household, Sara has a cute little dog on her pink hoodie. I think after first season I imagined her as liking all animals. Obviously horses are her favorite, but she loves all animals. I love the way that food is used as a way of showing class in this scene. Kind of want spaghetti but I already had pasta for lunch.
There’s no way for jodphurs not to be kind of a posh pretentious word, in my mind.
Oh hey, I’ve been called out by Sara in this scene again. I feel like this is every fight I had with my family growing up, especially my extended family.
It is interesting that Simon says the thing about the party to his mom, and lies about it. Because it happens so early on and it establishes that Simon is someone who will lie to his mom. Usually fandom portrays Simon and Linda’s relationship as I guess like a close bond. But like they’re not always honest with each other from the get go.
August is wearing his checked jacket and I’m going to die. It’s so good, I just want a butch lesbian to wear that jacket in the 1950s.
Henry and Walter are happening.
The light off of Simon‘s game controller is so nice. It kind of reminds me of his glow sticks later in the episode. Simon is always surrounded by these little things that glow. He is the glow!
I know everyone’s like, why would Alexander wake people up at 7 AM? And honestly if the seniors on my hall in college, were like give me a wake up call at 7 AM, and it was a senior I thought was super cool, I would’ve done it. Maybe I am a submissive like Alexander.
Yes, this is the part where like Simon goes full socialist in class. That was the part where I was like, I really like him. I love it when I have students like Simon IRL who say these things. Simon do you have an opinion you want to share with your classmates? Yes, you’re all rich fucks, go home.
We all know who the biggest welfare receivers are… do you want to receive my welfare, Simon says, wagging his eyebrows.
The part where Willhelm is like I like what you said back there Simon… I think because he’s got a polo on, it just feels a little bit like I’m about to recruit you for my company… my sexy company where you disagree with my family’s existence.
That shot were like Simon’s on the steps and then like August and Nills and Vincent all look back at him. They kind of look like they’re about to drop an album. They’re the rival evil corporate boyband in a movie about an underdog boyband that got their start in their garage. Such a good shot.
August is like we won’t go blind from your moonshine, will we? to Simon, and like I feel like that’s just a weird translation. But I just want to think August had no friends growing up, and he wasn’t allowed to read anything published after WW2 because his parents insisted on classics, so like he doesn’t know what the hip slang is. So he just talks like it’s the 1920s. Like first year for August at Hillerska was dire. He called something “the bee’s knees” and Eric had to be like no no we we’re not doing this no shut up I am fixing you.
Oh now Simon is going to see his dad. Oh my God the emotions.
So it’s interesting how Micke keeps asking about Sara and Linda. Could there me more to it in S3? This between Simon and his dad is so well written because you can feel that they have a connection or have had one at one point. You can feel that Simon still kind of wants to connect with his dad but also feels disconnected. You get the sense that it wasn’t all bad, which I think is really important when writing an abusive family situation. If abusers were monsters all the time what they do wouldn’t be abuse. On the other hand, it makes these scenes gut wrenching.
Wilhelm’s initiation. Mine was nothing like this, by the way.
August’s checked coat is back! He’s been a diabolical boy, but he is wearing the checked coat.
Once a brother…
OK, the punch at the party. You just look at it and you can taste how bad it is. Like, yikes.
Oh, we’re almost to one of my favorite like filming moments! We see Wilhelm see Simon coming to the party, but Sara is next to Simon and August is next to Wilhelm. Shadow couples! Shadow couples! Shadow couples!
August is like keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Whatever dude, like you haven’t noticed Sara already subconsciously. Like you aren’t already having sex dreams about her and then forgetting it in the morning because you’re basic and not in tune with your damn self.
Simon‘s glow stick halo!!!!!!!!!!!
Now Sara‘s giggling she’s in like a sensory seeking mood and it’s cute. Felice fully puking is less cute. Sara‘s outfit at the party is very autistic tenage girl goes to her first party. The drunk conversation between Sara and Felice is like giving me so much life. I forget how much it gives me life. I forget how good the actual show is and then I’m watching it again and it’s there!
Simon and Wilhelm talking. They’re teenagers flirting and it’s so awkward. (I showed this episode to my mom once and she couldn’t handle how like awkward-cute they are. She was like no I can’t do this and she got up and she went to do the dishes.)
I think they mention in season 2 that the palatset is an old factory and there’s something going on here with this former working class site being made into the playground for the rich kids.
I love when they’re sitting outside the party. Rainbow lighting! The way this is filmed reminds me of a scene from And Then We Danced. (A movie people should watch!) The scene in And Then we Danced leads to some more explicitly gay stuff and initially that’s where I thought this scene was going. The rainbows and the flirting are cute too though and I love them.
I could tell that you were singing from your heart. I say this with all the affection in the world, Wilhelm, but, you’re a little fruity. Simon asks Wilhelm if he’s happy here and Wilhelm says yes because he’s finally flirting with Simon, but there’s an undercurrent of I don’t know how to tell the truth I’ve been raised in a hellish PR machine oh shit get down it’s the cops.
(August and the boys are the cops.)
Just the way the guys are like oh he’s probably making out with someone and then Wilhelm and Simon make eye contact. Whe show doesn’t need to tell you much, you just know they’re like oh shit we could be making out and they’re like thinking about it and getting bothered. And now we got the hand over the mouth. (It’s a little kinky. Kinky lite.)
Like, I just think the show is so smart. The way it lets the audience put things together. I appreciate that. Roll credits.
See you next time for S1E2!
