Am I like… way too charitable in my reading of Sara Eriksson when I say I don’t think she was intentionally threatening to out Stella in 2.6? And I don’t see that as something she’d do? I can see how Stella would feel unsettled by Sara’s comment about being honest about feelings, but I also don’t see that as being part of Sara’s agenda in that scene or elsewhere in the show.
Still, there are fans who take it as a given that Sara would happily do something like that at the drop of a hat. I know Sara’s my fave and for other people she’s the opposite of that. But I think I have a pretty solid reading on Sara’s character, too. I’m not saying it’s impossible she’d do something to out Stella. YR as a show does like to show us the moments where characters betray their own values, and how they end up grappling with that, but an important part of that narrative is also showing what leads up to that moment, and explaining things without excusing them.
On the other other hand, I feel like Stella’s in-the-closet plot is firmly in Stella’s hands now, and Sara has parted ways with it when she left Hillerska with her rolling suitcase. So much of Sara’s arc has been about who to tell what and when, and when things should and shouldn’t remain secret to keep people safe. She’s reported some kind of crime to law enforcement at the end of season 2, and possibly put the school under public scrutiny in the process (based on the promo for season 3.) I feel like that’s raised the stakes and taken her truth-telling arc outside the realm of like… what goes on in her (ex) school friend group. This is not to say that Stella’s feelings for Fredrika aren’t thematically important still, but, speaking in terms of plot mechanics, the stedrika arc and the Sara arc are no longer as braided together as they were in season 2.
Takes like ”Sara would totally do this evil, anti-queer thing because she’s inherently bad and selfish” make me feel like someone is trying to convince me that the grass is purple.
