Oh wow, I can imagine that being introduced to Utena via the movie was an experience! I definitely think it was a formative series for me, too, and a lot of the things I like nowadays have something Utena-ish at their core. Maybe it’s a whole pattern of things, or maybe it’s a just a tiny thread, but I can usually find some connection.

I rather adore Young Royals, too, and I think it does a brilliant job exploring things like identity and trauma and cycles of abuse and oppression. It also trusts its audience to connect its many dots. On the whole it seems to pull in a very different demographic of fans than Utena, though. That may be part of YR’s advertising, which kind of markets it as Heartstopper’s and Red White and Royal Blue’s slightly angsty Scandinavian cousin, and it’s just… very much not that.

But I’m always hesitant to recommend it because it’s possible someone won’t see what I see and they’ll just be like, what is this romancey teen drama? It makes me a little protective of it, not gonna lie.
